Laws that can affect Pet Fostering
Laws change and pet foster parents should be familiar with changes in the law that may affect their ability to foster. Pet foster parents and organizations that have pet foster programs should be familiar with (or at least know where to look to find out more) about statutes/and local ordinances. Although each jurisdiction is different, The Pet Foster Parent Support Network will keep up to date about laws that affect pet fostering where you live. For Members, learn more about the law here.
VOLUNTEERS: thoroughly read the fostering agreement provided by your local shelter.
ORGANIZATIONS: Review Local Statutes that affect Breeding, Breed Specific Legislation, Quarantine(s), Housing codes and State Law that may affect transporting animals across state lines (where applicable).
NEWS UPDATE from the IRS: From the Wall Street Journal June 2011: Oakland Woman sets precedent for volunteer Pet Foster Parents to deduct expenses while volunteering for a charity or rescue - Link.
